Bildschirmeinstellung geht verloren

Hallo,
ich hab Suse 10.1. Beim Installieren wurde der Bildschirm (ProView, Baujahr '99) nicht erkannt, die Schrift war zuerst riesig groß (5cm)! Dann hab ich die Installation wiederholt und mir etwas Passendes aus dem Konfigurations-"Angebot" rausgesucht. Hat auch prima geklappt und ich war glücklich, dass ich nun die andern Probleme angehen konnte.
Umso enttäuschter war ich, als irgendwann nach einem User-Wechsel auf einmal wieder diese riesigen Lettern auftauchten. An dem Abend hab ich erst mal Schluss gemacht und mich entschlosssen, es doch bei Windows zu belassen.
Nun hab ich mir es noch einmal überlegt, vielleicht klappts ja doch noch.
Welche Möglichkeit gibt es, die Bildschirmkonfiguration zu sichern?
Wenn das nicht geht, wie kann man die Konfiguration möglichst einfach und ohne grafische Oberfläche wiederherstellen?

Ich hatte vorher mal Linux mit Knoppix angeschaut. Da gab es nicht solche Probleme. Wär es eine Lösung, statt Suse einfach Knoppix fest zu installieren?

Eine andere Distribution kannst du natürlich immer ausprobieren, insofern wäre das auch eine Lösung.
Kannst du deine Grafikkarte nicht über den Aufruf von sax2 konfigurieren?

Ansonsten kannst du natürlich die X Konfiguration auch per Hand machen.
Dazu musst du die /etc/X11/xorg.conf verändern.
Vielleicht postest du diese Datei einfach mal hier ... vielleicht sehen wir ja einen Fehler

Statt Proview 770 ist mein Bildschirm eigentlich ein Proview PT500. Aber der ist leider bei Suse10.1 nicht vorgesehen. Vielleicht schon zu alt?

Dein Monitor unterstützt ja mehrere Auflösungen. Du bist sicher, dass du nicht auf 640*480 arbeitest?? Siehe

Falls es das nich ist:
du solltest vielleicht erst einmal einen Standardbildschirm auswählen, und versuchen, ob es so funktioniert.
Ansonsten solltest du einmal die xorg.conf sichern.
Dann löschst du die gesamte Modes Section und ersetzt die Monitor Section etwa so:

Meistens brauchst du die Modelines usw. gar nicht. Wichtig ist, dass die Vertical Refreh und Horizontal Refresh Werte zu deinem Monitor passen.

Was mir noch aufgefallen ist... hat aber nichts mit Deiner Auflösung zu tun...
Du sagst du hast xorg.conf, aber ich hab folgendes entdeckt:
